How Many Times Should I Visit My Chiropractor?

Chiropractic Adjustments—One and Done?
Chiropractors—once they get you in, they’ll try to rope you in for life, right?

Wrong.

A good chiropractor will make recommendations based on the treatment that’s best for you. Sometimes the best course of action will require long-term treatment; sometimes one or two visits is enough to correct an issue. It all depends on the goal of your treatment.

There are two basic paths when it comes to chiropractic treatment: acute, short-term treatment and long-term health maintenance and injury prevention.

Think of it like this: You might go to your dentist once or twice for special treatment if you have a cavity. But you also go in once every six months for preventative cleanings and checkups.

Acute, short-term treatment might be called for if you get injured while exercising, moving something heavy, or if you get in a car accident. In this case, short-term care to treat pain and correct any misalignment that might have occurred as a result of the injury may be all that’s necessary for you to return to your normal activities.

Ongoing adjustments and long-term health maintenance, on the other hand, is not in response to a specific incident; rather, it’s a preventative measure. Regular adjustments and manipulations can help prevent injury and promote continued mobility and health in the long term.

Only you can your chiropractor can decide which is the best treatment plan for you. And whether your goal is to recover from an injury or maintain good health and spinal mobility for life, we’re here to help.

ChiroThin – The Results Are In!!

Why did I try ChiroThin? Over the summer I hit my highest weight and at my yearly physical my A1C was in the pre-diabetic range. The doctor wanted me to go on medications or to see an Endocrinologist about lowering it. I decided to go the Endocrinologist route but before they would even see me they wanted me to start taking medications. I knew if I made the choice to eat healthier I could lower it myself and not go on a medication that I most likely would never get off of. After a couple months of healthy eating I got back to my “normal weight” and my A1C was back to healthy range. I decided this was a good wakeup call and I made the commitment in October to really focus on getting to a healthy weight. I started another popular program that involved eating small meals 5 times a day and then a normal meal. It was very convenient and didn’t involve a lot of prep but I wasn’t a fan of the food and how much soy was also in it. It was working though so I stuck it out for 6-8 weeks to use up my food I purchased. Overall, I got down to my lowest weight in a year and was down about 15 pounds. I still wasn’t where I wanted to be though, especially going into the winter season. While I was doing my other program I got the info about ChiroThin and decided it was worth doing the free consultation to see if it would be a good fit. I loved that I could use my FSA account and this was the deciding factor for me. Overall I lost 25.2 pounds, 16.16 inches in six weeks and am at a weight I haven’t been in 8 years since before I got married! If you are serious about wanting to get healthier it is a great program. It’s not always easy but there will be temptations in any program and if you take some time each week to plan your grocery list/meals and prep some meals for each day it was much easier to not have excuses. And the best thing is you have an excuse not to work out for 6 weeks! If you stick with the program you will see results. There were only a couple days that my weight didn’t go down and those were usually days I cheated but you just get back on plan the next day and you’ll see results again. It is also possible to still eat out and go to events it just takes some pre-planning and checking out the menus ahead of time. The end goal is worth the discipline. My advice is find what works for you. In my case it was pitas. I ate 1/2 a pita at almost every meal or the flatouts were good too. Find variety so you don’t get bored with what you are eating. I also found it helpful to set an alarm so I did not miss taking my drops. Oasis staff are also very encouraging! – Angela

When Should You See A Chiropractor For Neck Pain?

While there are several things you can do at home to help relieve your neck pain, it’s important to know when it’s time to see a chiropractor for neck pain.

Chiropractors specialize in treatment for neck pain. After a physical exam and X-rays, they help to restore motion to stiff joints through a chiropractic treatment plan that usually includes chiropractic adjustments, specific neck exercises, and physiotherapy.

See a chiropractor for neck pain if:

  1. Your neck pain or stiffness does not improve after a few days.
  2. You cannot look to the right or left without severe neck pain.
  3. You feel like you must use over-the-counter pain medications just to make it through the day and are using it regularly to treat your neck pain.
  4. You’re worried that your neck pain may have a serious cause.
  5. Your neck pain started in the neck but has moved to numbness or tingling in your hands or wrists.
  6. Your neck pain started within a few days of a car accident.
  7. Your neck pain is worse when you first wake up in the morning but then begins to feel a little better as the day progresses.

We will conduct a thorough consultation and examination, asking you questions about your symptoms, the history of your neck pain, what types of movement make it worse and which things make it feel better.

During the exam, we will check to see how well you move your neck. We will look for tenderness or numbness and tingling in your arms or hands.

Seeing us at Oasis Chiropractic for neck pain is always a good choice if you are aware of a specific movement (abnormal motion) that resulted in neck pain such as lifting, falling or a whiplash injury.

Injuries resulting from abnormal motion often cause muscles to become overextended and the vertebra in our neck to shift out of alignment.

Through chiropractic therapy, we can realign your vertebrae and restore normal motion in your neck.

Top Ten Ideas For Cold And Flu Season

We are right in the middle of Cold and Flu Season. How can you stay healthy when everyone else is getting sick? Keep reading for 10 Ideas on how to stay healthy.

  1.  Chiropractic adjustments – The nervous system controls the spleen, bone marrow and lymph system. Spinal misalignments affect neural function and we have known this since 1975 when a study conducted showed a 200% greater immune competence in patients receiving long term chiropractic care vs no chiropractic. From that same study we also learned chiropractic patients had a 400% greater immune competence over people with cancer or other serious disease.
  2. Aerobic Exercise – Even 20-30 minutes per day for 5 days per week improves lung function and cardiovascular function. In addition, lymph flow increases, oxygen increases and body temperature increases.
  3. Sleep – Most people need 8-9 hours of sleep per night to function at a high level. Make sure you are sleeping in a cool, dark room and you sleep the same hours each day/night to maintain a proper circadian rhythm.
  4. Positive thought – Belief is powerful. Thinking and telling yourself you are healthy is a great idea. Who is the most negative person you know? If you can’t think of anyone, its probably you!
  5. Probiotics – Over 70% of your immune system is located in the gut. Probiotics are the healthy bacteria we need to maintain a strong immune system. Take a strong probiotic so it gets past the stomach acid plus alter the brands you’re taking to get a variety of strains. And remember, yogurt is a poor source of probiotics (the sugar and dairy kill the bacteria).
  6. Avoid sugar (or foods converted into sugar) and other bad carbohydrates. The average American consumes 300 grams of carbohydrate per day. 200 grams of less is better and 100 grams would be healthy.
  7. Immuplex – a broad based immune system vitamin, take daily
  8. Viracid – when you feel a cold or the flu coming on, take one per hour
  9. Fruits and Vegetables – Eat a few fruits and a lot of vegetables every day.
  10. Vitamin D – “The Sunshine Vitamin” Vitamin D plays a role in strengthening the immune system. Blood levels of 30 ng/ml will be sufficient to prevent Rickets but blood levels of 50 ng/ml or higher are necessary for optimal health. If your blood levels are low, make sure you are taking Vitamin D3 and not D2. Vitamin D3 will yield much better results.

How Can I Strengthen My Shoulder?

BAND SHOULDER ROTATION – INTERNAL

  • Secure the band at medium height on your side and grab the handle with the hand closest to it in front of you
  • Upper arm pressed against your abdomen and elbow bent.
  • Pull the handle in towards your abdomen and allow it to slowly return after a short pause.
  • Keep your upper arm pressed against your abdomen and elbow bent throughout. (10-15 reps)

BAND SHOULDER ROTATION – EXTERNAL

  • Secure the band at medium height on your side and grab the handle with the hand furthest from it in front of you,
  • Upper arm pressed against your abdomen and elbow bent.
  • Pull the handle out away from your abdomen and allow it to slowly return after a short pause.
  • Keep your upper arm and the angle in your elbow still throughout. (10-15 reps)

The “W”

  • Lift your arms up to form a “W” shape like the picture above (with your thumbs pointing backwards). This will bring your shoulder blades closer together.
  • Squeeze the shoulder blade together for 15-20 seconds.
  • Repeat 3x/day

The “L”

  • Bring your elbows down from the “W” position so that each arm forms an “L” shape coming out from your body at a 90 degree angle.
  • Keep your palms up and thumbs pointed back.
  • Squeeze and hold for 15-20 seconds
  • Repeat 3x/day

Is that shoulder still bugging you? Can’t seem to get better even after trying everything?
