When Should You See A Chiropractor For Neck Pain?

While there are several things you can do at home to help relieve your neck pain, it’s important to know when it’s time to see a chiropractor for neck pain.

Chiropractors specialize in treatment for neck pain. After a physical exam and X-rays, they help to restore motion to stiff joints through a chiropractic treatment plan that usually includes chiropractic adjustments, specific neck exercises, and physiotherapy.

See a chiropractor for neck pain if:

  1. Your neck pain or stiffness does not improve after a few days.
  2. You cannot look to the right or left without severe neck pain.
  3. You feel like you must use over-the-counter pain medications just to make it through the day and are using it regularly to treat your neck pain.
  4. You’re worried that your neck pain may have a serious cause.
  5. Your neck pain started in the neck but has moved to numbness or tingling in your hands or wrists.
  6. Your neck pain started within a few days of a car accident.
  7. Your neck pain is worse when you first wake up in the morning but then begins to feel a little better as the day progresses.

We will conduct a thorough consultation and examination, asking you questions about your symptoms, the history of your neck pain, what types of movement make it worse and which things make it feel better.

During the exam, we will check to see how well you move your neck. We will look for tenderness or numbness and tingling in your arms or hands.

Seeing us at Oasis Chiropractic for neck pain is always a good choice if you are aware of a specific movement (abnormal motion) that resulted in neck pain such as lifting, falling or a whiplash injury.

Injuries resulting from abnormal motion often cause muscles to become overextended and the vertebra in our neck to shift out of alignment.

Through chiropractic therapy, we can realign your vertebrae and restore normal motion in your neck.

How Many Times Should I Visit My Chiropractor?

Chiropractic Adjustments—One and Done?
Chiropractors—once they get you in, they’ll try to rope you in for life, right?

Wrong.

A good chiropractor will make recommendations based on the treatment that’s best for you. Sometimes the best course of action will require long-term treatment; sometimes one or two visits is enough to correct an issue. It all depends on the goal of your treatment.

There are two basic paths when it comes to chiropractic treatment: acute, short-term treatment and long-term health maintenance and injury prevention.

Think of it like this: You might go to your dentist once or twice for special treatment if you have a cavity. But you also go in once every six months for preventative cleanings and checkups.

Acute, short-term treatment might be called for if you get injured while exercising, moving something heavy, or if you get in a car accident. In this case, short-term care to treat pain and correct any misalignment that might have occurred as a result of the injury may be all that’s necessary for you to return to your normal activities.

Ongoing adjustments and long-term health maintenance, on the other hand, is not in response to a specific incident; rather, it’s a preventative measure. Regular adjustments and manipulations can help prevent injury and promote continued mobility and health in the long term.

Only you can your chiropractor can decide which is the best treatment plan for you. And whether your goal is to recover from an injury or maintain good health and spinal mobility for life, we’re here to help.

Can Chiropractic Help TMJ?

Dr. Alex here of Oasis Chiropractic in Cottage Grove. This week we are focusing on how our chiropractic care that we do here in the office can correct and manage jaw problems, sometimes known as TMJ dysfunction. The first thing to note is that jaw problems can effect many other things in the body. A study shows that any kind of TMJ issue can cause drastic changes in the neck leading to even more problems like neck pain and headaches.

However, there is positive research showing the effectiveness of chiropractic on improving function and pain of jaw movements. In fact, the protocol we use here has been shown to get great results so I wanted to explain exactly what we do.

First thing is we feel the side of the joint to locate the problem by having the patient open and close their mouth. Since the TMJ is a small, sensitive joint we use the activator tool to send a quick, gentle force into the joint at a specific angle to allow the joint to move and work properly. This can provide immediate relief and with time and repetition we can make great progress.

If you have questions about TMJ, please contact our office. I included several research articles below for your review.

The results of this prospective case series indicated that the TMD symptoms of these participants improved following a course of treatment using the Activator Methods, International protocol.
J. of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (2003), J.W. DeVocht.
Case study: TMJ dysfunction may cause cervical muscular and
spinal biomechanics changes that may become visible and change on x-ray
examination.
J. of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (1999), G.A. Knutson.
Case study: The results of the study show mandibular opening distance was returned to normal in addition to the abolition of the patient’s TMJ pain and clicking.

Benefits Of Chiropractic Adjustments For Your Children

You’ve heard about kids going to the chiropractor for a variety of reasons and your friend takes her child to the chiropractor, is there any benefit for a child to receive a chiropractic adjustment?

1. Children who get adjusted are happier and better behaved because they have a healthier spine and nervous system.

2. Kids that get adjusted, don’t get sick as often. Your body has an amazing ability to fight off disease; adjustments allow your body’s immune system to work at its optimum. Kids that do get sick, don’t stay sick as long and don’t get as sick. This means fewer trips to the pediatrician, less medication, and fewer missed days of work and school.

3. Improved concentration in school means better grades. Adjustments enhance blood flow to the brain and improve communication between the brain and the sensory organs of the body, which leads to better learning ability.

4. Increased sports and athletic performance. You don’t have to be a star athlete to enjoy these benefits. Athletes in a study were evaluated in 11 different categories including agility, balance, power, and reaction time. The athletes receiving chiropractic care showed significant improvement by over 30% in all categories.
*Lauro A Mouch B. Chiropractic: The Journal of Chiropractic Research and Clinical Investigation 1991; 6 84-87

5. Better adaptation to their growing and changing body while they learn to crawl, walk, run, and play sports. Adjustments help kids deal with the mental stresses from school, parents, and peer pressure.

6. Improved nerve function allows the body to heal itself of many chronic childhood conditions such as:
Asthma, Allergies, Colic, Ear Infections, Bed Wetting, Scoliosis, ADHD, and Growing Pains just to name a few.

7. Preventative adjustments decrease the chance of future spine problems that may lead to arthritis, degenerative disc disease, scoliosis, carpal tunnel, back pain, and headaches.

Do I Need A Referral To See A Chiropractor?

RX symbol

The short answer is no, so call one right away!! Just kidding, you can call when you’re ready.

A referral is NOT needed to see a chiropractor at Oasis Chiropractic.

The longer answer uses words like portal of entry and primary care. Those are technical terms, don’t worry about them. Here’s what it means to you. You can go to a chiropractor, get diagnosed, get treated, all in the same visit!! Now that’s easy!!

The only thing I’ll say about diagnosis is, as long as your condition is a chiropractic condition I can give you a diagnosis. If you have something else going on, I’ll find the right person for you to see.

OK, so here’s the problem with health care today; patients tell me they feel like they’re getting bounced around from one doctor to the next. Let’s face it, people are busy, they don’t want to sit around in a doctor’s office. They want to get in, see a doctor and get on with their life. Our patients have told me Oasis Chiropractic felt warm and inviting. They didn’t have to spend a lot of time for each appointment and patients have found it is easy to get on the schedule for our office.

To see a chiropractor at Oasis Chiropractic, you do NOT need a referral. Simply, call us to make an appointment. Same day appointments are possible.

Do You Crack Your Knuckles?

crack your knuckles

Doesn’t cracking my joints cause arthritis?

How many times have we all been told cracking your fingers will cause you to have arthritis and to knock it off? Many! The truth of the matter is that if you crack your knuckles the sound is actually the release of gases from the joint. So if you crack your knuckles there is little evidence that ties that to arthritis.

Arthritis can actually be a process that occurs when our bones are not moving the way they should. This causes dysfunction all around that area, along with others, that can lead to changes of the bone and disc in your back.

That being said let’s talk about what we do in our office as far as “cracking”. First off we call it a “cavitation” and it is something that can be a result of an “adjustment”. An adjustment is a specific force delivered to a specific misalignment of the spine. Sometimes in this process there is a cracking sound that is produced, but that is not the adjustment. There are also adjustments that do not create the sound, for a cavitation is not a requirement.

If someone is not a fan of the cavitation, we do offer other options in our clinic. We do have some adjusting tools such as the Activator that can be used to still achieve an adjustment. It is a spring loaded device that is able to apply a specific force, at a specific depth and speed. It is something that is approved to use even on babies and elderly with osteoporotic bone.

So to get back to the real question….. NO, CRACKING JOINTS WILL NOT GIVE YOU ARTHRITIS.

What Is The Cracking Sound During An Adjustment?

activator

When a chiropractor does a neck adjustment, the joint separates just enough to release pressure. The joint separation is within the normal range of motion so nothing is damaged. The pressure release is from different gases such as hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide.

Some chiropractic patients tell us they like hearing the cracking sound and some patients say they do not. We have several adjusting techniques that we can use on our patients. The manual, or hand adjustments, can be done with most patients who do not have a preference. Some patients do not like the sound and instead we use an adjustment instrument called the activator or integrator.

Instrument adjusting is very popular with patients who do not want to hear the cracking sound. Sometimes we call the activator “the clicker.” The activator works great for kids, the elderly and anyone else who doesn’t want to hear the cracking sound during the adjustment.
